February Marimba Recitals

There are a number of marimbists who are doing recitals around the country. I wanted to list out a few of them that I know about in order to promote the marimba to a larger audience.

Kyle Maxwell-Doherty gave a graduate recital at the Music Building, Crowder Hall in The University Of Arizona. The recital occurred on February 1, 2010 at 7:30pm. For more information visit the campus events page. The marimba piece is Kevin Puts “Canyon”.

Cat Boyd will present a junior recital later today which I hope will feature “Marimba For An Angel” by Orlando Cotto. It will be performed tonight at 8:00pm at the Boston Conservatory. For more information visit her Facebook event page.

Marco Schirripa will perform his second junior recital February 19, 2010 at 7:00pm in Nabenhauer Recital Room at Ithica College. This one will be with only 1 month of preparation because that is how he “rolls”.

Kendall Guischard will present a graduate recital at Duncan Recital Hall in Morehead State University Wednesday February 24, 2010 at 8:00pm. For more information visit his Facebook event page.

Let me know if there are more recitals and I will be sure to help promote them!

2010 Classical Marimba League Artist Competition deadline today

The 2010 Classical Marimba League Artist Competition deadline is today Monday February 1, 2010. Submit your applications with a postmark no later than today to participate in this year’s competition.

The winner of the competition will perform at the University of Minnesota as part of the Marimba 2010 International Festival and Conference. I will be in the audience this year to listen to the winner. I am not sure if that is motivation or not for submitting an application but I sure am looking forward to it!

Ji Hye Jung’s New Percussion Web Site

Marimbist Ji Hye Jung has created a new web site at: http://www.jihyepercussion.com/ The site has a number of videos as well as information about projects she is working on.

Of special interest to me is the announcement of the name of the new marimba solo by John Serry. The piece is called “Groundlines”. I was honored to be a part of the consortium of 20 marimbists to make that new solo possible. Look for more information about that piece as soon as it is released later this year.

Article on Zeltsman Marimba Festival published in Minnesota Percussion News

My article on the 2009 Zeltsman Marimba Festival has been published in the Minnesota Percussion News. This publication comes out a few times a year and is the state version of the larger Percussion News publication from the Percussive Arts Society.

Marimba 2010 International Festival and Conference

The Marimba 2010 International Festival and Conference will be held from April 28 – May 1, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This will be a once in a lifetime event, which according to artistic director Fernando Meza, is a “celebration of the marimba”. The event will feature marimbists from Spain, Croatia, Portugal, China, Taiwan, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Japan, Argentina, Canada, Italy, England, United States, Ghana, Greece, Costa Rica, Poland, Mexico, Israel, El Salvador, France, Denmark, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Korea. That is 25 countries!

What makes this event special, in addition to the lineup of artists, is that the festival will feature the marimbists playing with Minnesota’s finest orchestras and ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra, VocalEssence, members of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, and Minnesota Youth Symphonies, to name a few.

“This event will create a unique forum for the mix of cultural influences that will merge dynamic art forms and foster cross-cultural understanding between participants, provide future benefits for each of the countries involved, and ultimately celebrate the marimba in a grand way”, says Meza on the festival website.

The event has received support from many organizations in the community and it is that community involvement that has made it possible.

To learn more about this global celebration of the marimba navigate to the festival website, visit the Facebook event page, or register now for the event! Feel free to leave comments on this blog letting me know if you are coming. I am also personally excited to showcase the twin cities to the rest of the world. I hope that everyone can come to this fantastic event!

MacRimba Performance at MacPhail School of Music

The MacPhail School of Music‘s MacRimba marimba ensemble performed an informal concert on November 14th. The concert featured the following pieces:

“Antonio Vivaldi Presto from Concerto Summer Op. 8 No 2. RV315” arranged by Aaron Williams

“Ancient Dances of Peten” arranged by Laurence Kaptain

“Three Concert Pieces for Eight Hands on Two Marimbas” by Earl Hatch edited by Robert Schietroma

“Spanish Dance” by E. Granados arranged Ron Fink

“Allegro from Quartett in C – KV 157” by W.A. Mozart Arranged by Lynn Glassock

Each semester that the MacRimba class performs we continue to increase the level of difficulty on the selections while still keeping a primary focus of having fun playing the marimba.

Intermediate Masterworks for Marimba at PASIC 2009

This year’s Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) is going on right now in Indianapolis, Indiana. I will not be able to attend but I wanted to post a couple highlights from “afar”.

The main one is selections from “Intermediate Masterworks for Marimba” will be at the Sagamore Ballroom today at 2pm. One early peek at a track from that performance from Thomas Burritt is “Have You Met Lydia?” which you can listen to at his Tumblr site.

Also be sure to stop by the Steve Weiss Music booth and say hi to (in my opinion) the best percussion store in the US. Pick up a copy of both volumes of the “Intermediate Masterworks for Marimba” book as well as the double CD which is pictured here from the @steveweissmusic Twitter account. If you are not at PASIC, buy Volume 1, Volume 2, and the double CD online!

I would love to hear how the ZMF 2009 session was received. Feel free to comment or include #pasic09 in your tweets so we can all catch the “buzz”!
